NEW YORK — A New York City subway train severed a man’s leg and removed part of his arm as he fled onto tracks to escape police, authorities said Thursday.
Subway workers spotted the man in a tunnel but could not stop the trains in time, a transit official said.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said the train sliced off Corey Brown’s left leg. Brown also lost part of one of his arms, police said.
The injury happened at 1:27 a.m. Saturday near the 121st Street station on the J line in Queens. Brown remained in critical condition at a hospital Thursday.
Police said he has been arrested on charges of unlawful use of a vehicle, criminal trespass and resisting arrest.
Police said they spotted Brown and another man, Regan Concepcion, late Saturday and suspected they were stealing a car. When police approached, Brown fled.
MTA spokeswoman Deirdre Parker said police came into the Jamaica Center terminal looking for him around 1 a.m. The officers did not see Brown anywhere on the platform or trains, and were giving up the search and leaving the area when an MTA motorman said he saw someone on the tracks.
Police said they asked the MTA to cut power. But by the time the rail control center could do so, another train had already left the Jamaica Center terminal, Parker said.
Authorities suspended service on the track until 7:45 a.m. while police investigated, Parker said.
Concepcion also was arrested on charges of unlawful use of a vehicle.
Police did not release telephone numbers for the men. It was not clear if they had lawyers.
